Green Party of Ontario Candidate - Hamilton Centre
Sept 26 & 27

Day 21 - Monday Sept 26th

Early morning – delivered signs

9 am – left with a backpack full of postcards visited all of the 700 series polls in Hamilton Centre (health care, subsidized residence facilities and seniors residences).  There are 33 in total! At some locations I handed over stacks of postcards. At other places I had to distribute – some buildings were huge including a 22 floor apartment building.

3:30 pm – finally sat down to eat something at Limoncellos on Ottawa Street. Nice spot.

Also browsed at a few antique shops on Ottawa Street, and said hello to Susie at Susie’s Slipcovers. Neat spot.

Evening – finished a local poll, delivered signs, dropped off postcards for other canvassers.

As always, responding to voice messages and e-mails throughout.

Today on the bike? 50  kms   Total campaign bike mileage to date: 485 km

Day 22 – Tuesday Sept 27th

Morning – teach physics lab at Mohawk College

Drop off postcards on Hamilton Mountain – 4 hours

One superintendant tried to block me from entering. I reminded him that political parties are entitled by law to canvass and drop literature in all apartment buildings. The superintendant quickly obliged. Most must be aware that the penalties for obstructing political messengers are severe. I wonder why the paper and the mainstream media cannot be held to the same accountability?

I’m getting tired of hearing about the “Top 3” parties only.

It’s the leadership debate tonight. If Mike Schreiner was not a threat to every party, he’d be included. The fact is that he is… and thus his message is muted wherever possible.

Tonight attending “Ignite the Spark” (or something like that). An event organized by the AGH, and held at Mohawk college.

Today on the bike? 30 kms   Total campaign bike mileage to date: 515 km

Blog Update: Sept 22-25

Borrowed the neighbour’s pickup truck for:

Quick trip to market in morning – picked up apples, cheese, veggies

Dropped off postcards to school with canvassers

Caught bus to McMaster in afternoon for my radio show 93.3 CFMU. We interviewed the mother of Nyki Kish Christine Bivens to hear about this horrible injustice that Nyki – and all related are experiencing – details at freenyki.org . Fortunately there is an appeal in progress. The brilliant Michael Nabert joined us to add his thoughtful input.

Met with Mike Schreiner, Leader of the Green Party of Ontario at McMaster University. The Silhouette interviewed him. Then off to Locke Street to meet with media there. CHCH TV, the Spec, the Brabant Papers, and Citizen Television out of TO. The only one missing? Surprisingly Cable 14.

The fundraiser was a huge success.  The Superband Fry Truck was amazing! Thanks to all who organized. Hit a couple of parties on the way home… late night.

Today on the bike? 5  kms   Total campaign bike mileage to date: 380 km

Day 19 - Saturday Sept 24th

Early morning – started cleanup from fundraiser. Missed the Ottawa Street Festival – shucks.  All day canvassing on Hamilton Mountain with a busload of volunteers. Yay!!! We covered lots of ground.

Today on the bike? 30 kms   Total campaign bike mileage to date: 435  km

Blogs!

Updating a blog daily has proven to be more difficult than expected - I give kudos to everyone who does it!  I have a lot of good stories from the past week and a half, so I will post them here for your reading pleasure.  The team is keeping busy and I thank everyone for their help and support over the past month. I really appreciate it.

So what have I (and the team) been up to over the past week or so?  How many km have I accumulated on the bike? Continue reading the next few posts to find out!

Day 14 - Monday Sept 19th

Day 16 - Wednesday Sept 21st

Whitehern – McQueston rehearsal for October 1st event at McMaster. I am reading some letters written by Tom McQueston . He left quite a legacy for Hamilton – the RBG, parks, Niagara Parks Commission, etc. Toured Whitehern as well – what a fascinating place! Liz Corey will perform as Ruby McQueston, and Dr. Mary Anderson from McMaster is organizing the whole event. Whitehern is beautiful – thank-you to Liz for the tour!

Cable 14 Debate at The Spec in the evening. I was certainly the only candidate that rode a bicycle to the televised debate! There were 7 of us candidates in total which made the discussion interesting.

What – no Progressive Conservatives present? It went fairly well, and will be screened multiple times until election day. Elections are really an educational campaign. The challenge is that most people don’t know much about the Green Party policy. Similarly, most don’t much about the parties that they’ve been voting for their whole lives.

How do we engage people, and have them viewing the Greens as the voice for grassroots movement at the political level? Out priority is to revitalize communities!

Today on the bike? 20 kms Total campaign bike mileage to date: 350 km

Have you ever looked around at election time and been tired of seeing the same old political lawn signs?

The Green Party of Hamilton is tired of it too! That is why we are promoting an exciting concept known as the sign competition. We would like you to try and design your own sign that promotes the Green Party of Ontario and Being Green.

Use old carboard, plastic and anything interesting around the house to design a sign that can go on your lawn or in the window.

Please send a picture to Leland Herrington at lelandherrington@gmail.com.

Whoever comes up with the best design will be invited to a special dinner as the election winds down. Their sign will also be presented prominently in the Green Party Hamilton media.

Have fun with your designs and let’s take some of the staleness out of election time!

-Message from your Hamilton Greens

Day 12 & 13
Day 12 - Saturday, Sept 17th

Helped out at the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Leland, Jerry, Barbara and myself picked up several bags of garbage and recyclables. We focused on one spot in particular, a small area surrounded by trees, and littered with litter. Why do people litter?

We helped Earth Day Hamilton’s cleanup team. Congratulations to Laurel Harrison for organizing her portion of the event. There are still more cleanups taking place, visit http://shorelinecleanup.ca/ for more info & to register or find a cleanup location!

Later that day I picked up apples and pears from Bentley’s Farms at the Hamilton Farmers Market. We’ll be handing out these natural treats at Open Streets tomorrow. (Borrowed the neighbour’s truck for this).

Attended the theatrical production The Cock Whisperer with Colette Kendall. The theme was both serious and humorous! She’s an amazing actor!

Zipped down to Gallery 205 at 205 Cannon Street East. It felt like Hollywood. Jim Unsworth, Dave Rave, Alex Zafer, Martyn Kendrick just to name a few…

Today on the bike? 10 kms   Total campaign bike mileage to date: 280 km

Day 13 - Sunday, Sept 18th

Attended our Green Party booth at Open Streets on James Street North all day. We were situated in Gore Park. The local apples and pears from the Farmers’ Market were greatly appreciated, and disappeared by day’s end.

The Green Being shirts delivered by Gary’s Screenprinting this morning are a hit. Thanks to Dave Franciosa for his logo artistry!

Dropped by the Art Gallery of Hamilton to meet Mary Anderson and get a copy of her book “Tragedy & Triumph: Ruby & Thomas B. McQuesten. What a tremendous family to learn about!

The Green Being strolled James, and reminded many of the importance of Being Green. We were interviewed by Moe at BizClips.

Trying to quarterback various aspects of the campaign. Canvassing (postcard drops) , fundraising, event attendance, sign installation, etc.

Off to bed, exhausted. Tomorrow is another day…

Today on the bike? 5 kms   Total campaign bike mileage to date: 285 km

Day 10 & 11

Day 10 - Thursday, Sept 15th

Teaching at Mohawk College in the morning - helps to pay the bills. Hopefully the strike of administrative staff will end soon!

Peter and Leland - 1st Green Wave - Gore Park!! Horns were honking and many salutes - mostly positive!

Today on the bike? 30 kms   Total campaign bike mileage to date: 235 km

Day 11 - Friday, Sept 16th

2nd Green Wave - King and Dundurn. It’s a parking lot and the air ain’t friendly.
Bumper to bumper cars with 99% single drivers. Is this another example of technology that improves our lives? Another reason to Vote Green.

Dropped off campaign postcards and introduced myself to vendors at stores on Locke Street South. Amazing reception! Only one fellow at a window and door company threw back the card. Doesn’t he understand that Green policies are going to make the market for energy efficient windows and doors skyrocket?

Attended the Smart Commute launch at Gore Park. Congratulations to organizer Peter Topalovic from the City of Hamilton! (Check out more Smart Commute Week events here: http://www.smartcommutehamilton.ca/en/events/smart-commute-week)

Rode to McMaster for my radio show, Green Sense, on 99.3 CFMU. Today’s guest was Tony Hornick, Canada’s 81 year-old sprouting expert. He also spoke of his dance website which received 1.2 million hits per month. Wow!

Boogied down to Ivor Wynne Stadium to catch the Ticat - Eskimo football fame. Two Green Beings appeared… and 15,000 people noted them as they walked around the stadium. We’re all Green, you know.

Today on the bike? 35 kms   Total campaign bike mileage to date: 270 km

Day 9

Day 9 - Wed Sept 14

Responding to countless e-mails and questions.Ordered more sign posts. Linked up sign captain. Secured more donations.

Conference call for a committee I sit on related to emissions from combustion turbines in Canada. The Federal government is developing regulations for large emitting industries. Limits are arrived at in cooperation with industry, government and non-government entities. I’m one of them.

Met with Leland at the Locke Street Bakery. We wolfed down a scrumptious pizza apiece. Then off to the Hamilton Spectator as the Green Party voice at the RNAO event. I was the only male on the panel, two of the others were nurse MPP’s.

Building Vibrant Communities was printed on the front of the brochure. Exactly, and in that local economy, healthy environment, local food, and overall and better life with reduced poverty, undernourishment and addiction. Sounds like the Green Party policy to me. We were well received. More offered to volunteer for the Greens. We must be doing something right.

Today on the bike? 20 kms   Total campaign bike mileage to date: 205 km

Day 7 & 8

Day 7 - Mon Sept 12

Copied and laminated Hamilton Centre Riding Maps at Allegra Printing. They’re awesome!

Rode bike and bus up to Mohawk College. Boogied back to hand over our Green Party buttons to another volunteer.

Phone is ringing off the hook

Visited Sean Burak at Bike Hounds. He’s a super guy, certainly being the change!

Evening time - joined other candidates in meeting the Hamilton Police Chief and his sergeants at the King William Downtown Station. Interesting discussion on crime trends, and the efforts of police to build and be part of community.

Delivered signs and paid a quick visit to my Mom - all on bike of course.  It was a full moon… and Raman the golden-doodle was restless.

Today on the bike? 20 kms    Total campaign bike mileage to date: 155 km

Day 8 - Tues Sept 13

Up early and off to teach a lab at Mohawk College. The admin strike is hampering progress in class. Before riding down Upper Wellington to James South, I stopped in for some ‘therapy’ - looking for deals at the second hand store. Gotta couple.

Called the Hamilton Spectator, and encouraged them to do an article on GPO Leader Mike Schreiner. Awesome! They’re doing the other main leaders, and will include Mike’s Green voice. Now it’s time to link that with LetMikeSpeak.ca

Our website can now accept donations online. Yippee!!! www.greenpartyhamilton.ca Join the 100 x $100 club. We’re 20% there already… donate $100 and get $75 back at tax time. Sweet!

Spoke with campaign manager Leland. He’s a smart cookie!

Day 5 & 6

Day 5 - Sat Sept 10th

After a 4 hour sleep, picked up locally grown apples and pears from the Hamilton Farmers Market. Then packed up for the Locke Street Festival.

The Green Party booth at the Locke Street Festival was a hit. http://www.lockestreetfestival.com/ Great response. We’re all Green after all, being Green Beings that need fresh air, clean water and healthy food to survive. Saying that, the Green Being was strolling up and down Locke Street.

I ate at Locke Street Bakery with the Green Being!

Met with our Campaign Team today. We separated 50,000 postcards into bundles of 100. Wanna help us drop off postcards into mailboxes in Hamilton? Get in touch and we’ll give you an area to deliver to. Take a couple of hours help us out.
